Following her interview Sunday night with ABC News, Gypsy Rose Blanchard will be the focus of a new reality/docuseries about her post-prison life on Lifetime, A&E Networks announced Monday.

“As a victim of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, Gypsy was abused for years by her mother and has lived her entire life in one prison or another… until now. The series follows Gypsy as she experiences life as a free woman, including finally living with her husband Ryan Anderson for the first time,” the network said in a press release.

Blanchard served served 8-and-a-half years of a 10-year prison sentence, and was released in late December. She pleaded guilty and was convicted in 2015 of second degree murder for her role in the death of her abusive mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.

In June 2015, Blanchard’s boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, stabbed Dee Dee to death while she was in bed asleep. But during her trial, it was revealed that Blanchard’s mother had manipulated, malnourished and even poisoned her in a years-long factitious disorder imposed on another (FDIA) con. She was kept as a virtual prisoner during her childhood and young adulthood, as her mother convinced her that she was fatally ill and forced her to pretend to be years younger than she was.

The story inspired Hulu’s Emmy-winning series “The Act” and HBO’s 2017 documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest.”

Since her release from prison, Blanchard has established a social media presence including an Instagram account with more than 8 million followers. She has also cowritten a new e-book, “Released: Conversations on The Eve of Freedom.”

Variety first reported the news.

Nikki Haley’s surprise cameo on “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend drew plenty of criticism for making light of her “slavery” Civil War gaffe. Among her critics is, apparently, “SNL” regular, Bowen Yang.

Yang shared a photo to Instagram of a note the show’s creator Lorne Michaels left for the politician, which read, “Amb. Haley, Welcome to Studio 8H, from Lorne + everyone at SNL.” In his one-word caption, Yang wrote, “Everyone. :),” The openly gay comedian and actor implied he was not part of those welcoming the politician, who said in 2022 that Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill “didn’t go far enough.”

He later deleted the post, but social media has been decoding Yang’s subtle protests of Michaels’ recent bookings for the past few months.

When Dave Chappelle joined the cast for the group farewell shot at the end of last week’s episodes, Yang stood as far away as possible from the comedian, whose anti-trans jokes in his 2021 Netflix special prompted walkouts by the streamer’s staff.

And when Shane Gillis, who was fired from “SNL” because of his racist jokes, was announced as the next host, fans of Yang’s noted that tge “Fire Island” star was having “a rough three weeks” on the NBC show. “I really hope this doesn’t feel as pointedly cruel for him as it does from the outside,” wrote Jarrett Wieselman on X.

Haley’s cameo came during a faux Donald Trump Town Hall, in which she asks Trump, “My question is why won’t you debate Nikki Haley?” she asked, referencing the former president’s refusal to participate in the Republican primary debates.

The final question was directed at Haley and came from host Ayo Edebiri: “I was just curious, what would you say was the main cause of the Civil War and do you think it starts with an ‘S’ and ends with a ‘lavery’?”

Haley replied “Yep, I probably should’ve said that the first time,” and then was the one to say, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”

Warner Bros. Discovery was named victorious Monday in a September 2022 lawsuit alleging David Zaslav and other executives inflated HBO Max streaming subscriptions ahead of Warner Bros. merger with Discovery, duping “hundreds of thousands” of shareholders.

Despite alleged “half-truths,” U.S. District Judge Valierie Caproni ruled that the proposed class action lawsuit, led by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, would not move forward, and that WBD was “not required to disclose a fact simply because it may be relevant or of interest to a reasonable investor,” according to court documents.

Yost said that WBD also hid WarnerMedia’s strategies for licensing content and distributing films, as well as the looming demise of the CNN+, the short-lived CNN spinoff.

Judge Caproni also ruled that Yost did not explain how the the plan to pull the plug on CNN+ was related to a “misleading” content strategy for the media giant.

Yost filed the lawsuit in Sept. 2022 on behalf of the Collinsville Police Pension Board, an Illinois-based shareholder of Warner Bros. Discovery stock, which it accepted in trade for its pre-merger Class C common Discovery shares. Warner Bros. Discovery, Zaslav and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels were named as defendants.

“Warner Bros. Discovery willfully withheld financial information that it was legally obligated to reveal for one highly self-serving reason – to ensure the merger’s approval,” Yost said in a November 2022 statement. “In doing so, it created market distortions that cost Ohio’s pension systems and other institutional investors dearly, and that is not OK.”

A lawyer representing Yost’s office declined to comment to Reuters on Monday.

At the time of the merger, Discovery shares were valued at $24.78, but dipped to around $11. On Monday, WBD’s stock price closed down 18 cents at $10.07, a 58% drop from when it began trading on April 11, 2022 Reuters reported.

Why ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Star Keyla Monterroso Mejia Was Shooting for the Moon With Maria Sofia’s Return https://www.thewrap.com/curb-your-enthusiasm-season-12-keyla-monterroso-mejia-interview/ https://www.thewrap.com/curb-your-enthusiasm-season-12-keyla-monterroso-mejia-interview/#respond Tue, 06 Feb 2024 00:10:56 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7486165 "Bigger, always go bigger," the breakout actor tells TheWrap of advice she got ahead of Season 12

The post Why ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Star Keyla Monterroso Mejia Was Shooting for the Moon With Maria Sofia’s Return appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
Note: The following story contains spoilers from the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Season 12 premiere.

It’s rare for “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to revisit a side character once their main season has ended. But in the HBO staple’s final season, the series makes room for one final nod to Keyla Monterroso Mejia’s delightfully bizarre Maria Sofia Estrada.

Mejia told TheWrap it was “crazy” to be back after the end of last season. “The overwhelming response that I received, I felt really grateful,” she said.

Maria Sofia was a thorn in Larry’s (Larry David) side all throughout Season 11 of the comedy. After a man drowned in his unfenced pool, Larry found himself blackmailed by Marcos (Marques Ray). As long as Larry agreed to cast Marcos’ daughter in his new show, the restaurant owner promised to not press charges for his brother’s death. The only problem was that Maria Sofia was one of the most inconsistent actors ever brought to screen.

In true “Curb” fashion, Season 12 doesn’t start with the world agreeing with Larry’s assessment that Maria Sofia is a bad actress. Instead, it starts with her becoming the breakout star of “Young Larry” complete with magazine covers, late night appearances and a tiny emotional support Corgi.

“It’s fun to be the same crazy, weird person but in a completely different situation, which I think is a dream situation to her,” Mejia said. “I think she loves being famous and rich and important.”

Though Maria Sofia was an annoyance to Larry last season, his main feud took place with her father, Marcos. That’s not the case when it comes to Season 12’s premiere, an episode that pits the gregarious and fun-loving starlet against the curmudgeonly Larry.

Larry David and Keyla Monterroso Mejia

Mejia said that working more closely with David in these scenes was “nerve-racking” but also “really fun.”

“It’s crazy to watch someone who’s — I feel like legend is such a funny word to say — but to watch [David] in action and see how he responds or see the things he comes up with. It’s like a master class. It’s crazy seeing it happen right in front of your eyes,” Mejia said.

As for her own time on the show, director and executive producer Jeff Schaffer’s main note for Mejia was always “bigger.”

“It was like, ‘Bigger, bigger, bigger, always go bigger. We can bring you down, but it’s really hard for us to get you to go bigger,'” Mejia recalled. It’s this encouragement that helped Mejia embrace one of Maria Sofia’s signature qualities, her endless dancing.

Originally, Maria Sofia’s love of dance wasn’t part of the script. Instead Mejia called the detail a “gift” from her scene partner and in-show father, Marques Ray. During her first or second day of shooting, Ray made an offhand comment that his daughter also danced while he was trying to sell Larry on Maria Sofia. That’s when Mejia knew she had to “commit” to the bit. The dancing became the final piece she needed to understand “where this character lives.” But it didn’t come without a cost.

“What is so sad is I’m trying in that scene,” Mejia said, laughing. “I’m not a great dancer, I know. But that was me trying my best. Immediately, when everyone started laughing out loud, I was like, ‘I’m happy that you’re laughing, but oh my god.'”

Between her time on “Curb” and as Melissa’s (Lisa Ann Walter) incompetent teacher’s aid in “Abbott Elementary,” Mejia has made a name for herself portraying characters that simply rub people the wrong way. The actor noted that these characters don’t mirror who she really is.

“I don’t think anybody in the real life necessarily reacts that way, or there are very few and far in between. Maybe they even react the way that I wish I could react sometimes,” Mejia said. But she enjoys portraying these larger-than-life figures and taking up space.

“I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to be who I am. I’m going to be loud. This is me, and I’m going to do whatever I feel,” Mejia continued. “Every intrusive thought wins.”

As fun as it may have been to play Maria Sofia, above all else Mejia is grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a storied piece of television history.

“They’ve been together for years, this is a very tight knit group,” Mejia said. “Even in the season before this, they took me in and they were so kind to me, and they showed me such great hospitality. I feel really grateful to be a small part of what this show is and the legacy that it has.”

The Season 12 premiere of Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” totaled 1 million cross-platform viewers on Max and HBO, TheWrap has learned.

The figure marks a 26% increase compared to the audience of 788,000 and 789,000 viewers who tuned in for the Season 11 premiere and finale, respectively. Season 11 ultimately averaged 4.3 million viewers per episode across platforms.

The comedy series was competing for eyeballs on Sunday with music’s biggest night — The 66th annual Grammy Awards — which scored 16.9 million viewers on CBS, according to Nielsen fast national and Out of Home ratings data. That’s up 34% from the 12.4 million viewers brought in by last year’s ceremony, which at the time marked the Grammys’ biggest audience since 2020.

The “Curb Your Enthusiasm” final season opener starts out as a simple trip to Atlanta, Georgia. But in the show’s classic fashion, chaos ensues ultimately ending in David’s arrest for breaking the state’s voting laws by giving water to Auntie Rae at the conclusion of the episode.

The episodes highlights include a hilarious fight between David and Siri, and a recreation of Donald Trump’s infamous mugshot from when he was arrested in Fulton County, Georgia, last year.

In addition to David, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Season 12 stars Jeff Garlin (“The Goldbergs”), Susie Essman (“Broad City”), J.B. Smoove (“Mapleworth Murders”), Cheryl Hines (“Suburgatory”), Richard Lewis (“Anything But Love”), Ted Danson (“The Good Place”), Vince Vaughn (“Wedding Crashers”) and Tracey Ullman (“Tracey Ullman’s Show”).

David, Garlin, and Jeff Schaffer serve as executive producers, with Laura Streicher and Jennifer Corey serving as co-executive producers.

Fox News recommended former President Donald Trump take the Super Bowl interview slot this Sunday in light of President Joe Biden declining to go on air during the big game. Shortly after, Trump made his own offer on social media to take Biden’s slot doing the interview that’s become an annual tradition.

Trump mockingly wrote in a Truth Social post that it was a good idea for Biden to skip the exposure he’d get giving an interview with CBS on Super Bowl Sunday.

“Crooked Joe Biden has just announced that he will not be doing the big Super Bowl interview,” Trump wrote on his conservative social media site. “A great decision, he can’t put two sentences together. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO REPLACE HIM — would be ‘RATINGS GOLD!’”

Trump hasn’t always been so eager for a Super Bowl interview — he declined the offer himself back in 2018 before the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33. However, Trump would go on to do Super Bowl interviews in later years, including during the 2020 election ahead of ultimately facing Joe Biden.

Earlier Monday, “Fox & Friends” host Carley Shimkus asked contributor Joe Concha why the president might have opted out of the coverage when he has faced low poll numbers ahead of the 2024 election.

“This is by far the lamest, most intelligence-insulting excuse you will ever hear as far as why the president is hiding from this interview for the second consecutive year,” Concha said. “The interview is like hours before the game, so it’s not about that. So please stop. It’s truly telling that Joe Biden’s handlers are simply petrified of putting him in front of a camera without a teleprompter or scripted remarks to guide him.”

“The Super Bowl, even the pregame, is by far the most watched program of the year, and when you’re a president, who is polling lower than any in polling history, three years into the job, you would think he would be out there trying to sell his message on why he and his administration deserve four more years,” Concha continued.

The host went on to suggest Trump do the interview instead.

Concha took one last swipe at Biden’s handlers, and the president himself, before the end of the Fox News segment.

“Joe Biden is a, and I’ll be blunt about this, a coward. Plain and simple,” Concha said. “He should be telling his handlers he wants this interview because instead, it looks like he’s hiding somewhere in Delaware that day, which he probably will be doing.”

Years after Ricky Martin starred in Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story,” the singer is returning to TV for Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” — a show he teases will transform viewers’ perspectives.

“It will change the way you think about life in general,” Martin said Monday during the 2024 Television Critics Association winter press tour, adding the Kristen Wiig-led dramedy is a “tearjerker.”

Martin also confirmed that he is preparing to release new music, and shared his growing passion for acting alongside his singing career.

“It’s about being honest — that’s how I feel every time I’m on set,” Martin continued, adding that acting is “something that people can relate to.” “Music is something that I’ve been doing since I was four years old, but there’s something about being in front of the camera as an actor that I’m incredibly passionate about.”

The opportunity to star in “Palm Royale,” which debuts March 20 on the streamer, came about after showrunner and EP Abe Sylvia spoke with Martin’s agent at an Oscars’ party. Three days later, Martin read the scripts and a week later, he was on a plane from Puerto Rico to meet with the creative team.

“I was fascinated by the opportunity to work with such incredible legends,” Martin said of acting opposite comedy icons like Wiig, Laura Dern, Carol Burnett, Bruce Dern and Allison Janney.

Martin shares the screen with Burnett in several cheeky scenes — including one where Burnett’s Norma Dellacorte asks him to make her a martini and then “play doctor” with her — and even those where Burnett’s character is in a coma, Martin said she gave “so much.”

On one special day of production, Martin witnessed Laura and Bruce Dern act together for the first time.

“I was sitting there taking notes,” Martin said of watching the father-daughter duo’s dynamic. “Forget about the script, it was about really enjoying what he would come up with before the “action” and after the “action” — stories that he would share with us about his experiences throughout history. That was a gift and hopefully I will share with my children eventually — That’s the level of generosity that I felt during that.”

“Palm Royale” premieres March 20 on Apple TV+.

The Grammys recorded new growth with the 2024 ceremony soaring to the biggest audience the awards show has seen since 2020.

The 66th annual awards show brought in 16.9 million viewers on CBS, according to Nielsen fast national and Out of Home ratings data. That’s up 34% from the 12.4 million viewers brought in by last year’s ceremony, which at the time marked the Grammys’ biggest audience since 2020.

As the ceremony livestreamed on Paramount+, the Grammys saw its highest viewership on the streamer yet, up 173% from last year’s streaming audience. Estimates for delayed live-plus three-day viewing are expected to lift the Grammys audience to over 17 million viewers.

Viewership for the ceremony peaked with 18.25 million from 9:45 p.m. to 10 p.m., during the show’s In-Memoriam segment that featured performances from Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, Jon Batiste and Fantasia Barrino.

Viewership for the 2024 Grammys substantially exceeded the 2021 show, which received 9.39 million total viewers, as well as the 2022 ceremony, which saw a slight uptick with 9.59 million total viewers.

Still, Sunday night’s show, which was hosted by Trevor Noah for the fourth year in a row, fell short of the show’s pre-pandemic audience, which scored 18.8 million total viewers in 2020 and 19.9 million viewers in 2019.

Hosted at Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles, Sunday night’s show featured performances from SZA, Joni Mitchel, U2, Billy Joel, Burna Boy, Luke Combs (with Tracy Chapman), Travis Scott, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa.

The night included several buzzy moments, including Taylor Swift announcing a new album coming out in April as she claimed her Grammy for Best Pop Vocal album for “Midnights,” and Jay-Z calling out the Grammys for snubbing Beyoncé in the Album of the Year category.

On social media, the viral moments boosted the Grammys to average 62.6 billion potential impressions, making it the No. 1 social entertainment event of 2024 thus far. By Monday morning, social video clips of the Grammys reached 56.4 million.

Before the show, “Live from E!: Grammys” drew 1.5 million viewers — its biggest audience in seven years — as both the pre-show “Live from E!: Countdown to the Grammys” and post-show “Live from E!: Grammys After Party” also saw their highest total viewers in four years.

Kristen Wiig’s Maxine Simmons is determined to get into “the most exclusive club in the world” in “Palm Royale” — even if that means clawing her way inside.

In a trailer for the new Apple TV+ series, Wiig throws herself over the high walls of a Palm Beach social club, and is quickly thrown out when she is suspected to be an outsider. Despite being caught, Wiig sets her mind on joining the high society ranks of ritzy housewives, played fabulously by Allison Janney, Leslie Bibb and Julia Duffy.

“I had only been in Palm Beach two weeks, but I already knew the Palm Royale,” Wiig’s Maxine says in the trailer. “The most exclusive club in the world was where I belonged.”

As Maxine permeates the social club little by little, she faces roadblocks as Evelyn (Janney) tells Maxine directly, “I don’t like you.”

Set in 1969, Maxine also finds herself in the midst of a culture and class clash, as Maxine fields questions from an eager Laura Dern, who asks Maxine if she wants to work — which Maxine’s response is, of course, “God no!”

Pushing further into the seemingly glossy lives the women of the Palm Royale, facades shatter as even Janney’s Evelyn admits the social standing is a “nightmare.”

“Palm Beach is just a shell game,” Dern tells Wiig. “Everybody has a secret.”

In addition to Wiig, Janney, Bibb, Dern and Duffy, “Palm Royale” rounds out its cast with Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn and Kaia Gerber, and features guest stars Bruce Dern and Carol Burnett.

The official logline for the series is as follows: “As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, ‘Palm Royale’ asks the same question that still baffles us today: ‘How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?’ Set during the powder keg year of 1969, ‘Palm Royale’ is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance to truly belong.”

“Palm Royale” premieres March 20 on Apple TV+.
