Golden Globes Make a Case for ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Poor Things’, but Not Much of One for Themselves

With new voters and new ownership, the Globes put on an awkward, clunky show with a distinctly international sensibility

Cillian Murphy accepts the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama award at the 2024 Golden Globes (CBS)

It only took two awards for a winner to address the elephant in the room at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night. Robert Downey Jr., who won the supporting-actor award for “Oppenheimer,” thanked a variety of folks in his sardonically witty way, and then turned to the voters who’d put him on the stage of the Beverly Hilton.

“To the Golden Globe journalists,” he said, drawing out that last word, “thanks for changing your game, and therefore changing your name.”

This year’s Golden Globes changed the name of their voting body (the old Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been dissolved), changed the number of voters to 300, changed from a nonprofit enterprise to a for-profit one and changed its ownership when it was bought by Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions.

Disageee with the entirely aside from JonKoy.We do live in a global workd  and most USA films are made everywhere!  and you are winging  as excellent writers and filmmakers from overseas won?  There  work was better! The awards  were awarded where they should have . Barbie m wasn’t  a great movie-unwatchable to be frank exceopt  for its color and
production design-. It did have smart and expensive  marketing it had wonderful success  but merely a copy  of original IP that has existed for years and l feminist  tropes that are decades old. It folowed Mattel’s history to a T.  Neither were good on stage as you say and  who cares. It wasn’t the “who is good on stage awards. “ Barbie was  good costume/ prd design and deserved the catagory it won in. Thats it. The orger films were far more nuanced smarter  better and get over it. France invented cinena abd she  is a great writer – all of thrm much vetter screenpkays than Barbie . So talented others fron overseas won and you are winging?!!! Go overseas and kearn the workd abd geow your perspective. All tge winners were exactly what amart people are thinking.
