Welcome to the Unsanctioned Unofficial Game Pass Game Club. Our seventh game of 2023 is Return to Monkey Island. The target completion date is April 10, 2023.

We ask that until that date you use the forum software to mark any spoilers, either story based or mechanical, in the discussion below. Ideally the bulk of the discussion will occur after April 10, but if you want to comment before then you are welcome to so long as the spoilers are marked. We ask that if you leave a comment before that date you also come back to the thread after it to read other people’s comments and respond to them, though of course we cannot force you to do so.

I want to just say that the early outcry about this games' art style and people who hated the shift they made with Monkey Island's overall look with this title are dumb and this game looks great.

@zombiepie: agreed.. I think it was (like always) a vocal minority who heard Ron Gilbert was attached and wanted it to look like MI 1 and 2. They knew him from the originals and thimbleweed park, and made assumptions about the art style. It grew on me pretty quickly upon playing it.

I loved a lot of things about this game including how genuinely funny and nostalgic it was…but I gotta admit, the “open world” bit is a slog and a bit too reminiscent of the obtuse solutions of the old days. I know I could just pull up a guide like I would back then but instead I just walked away and never thought to come back.

I’d definitely like to some day, I’ve heard the ending is actually pretty thoughtful.

I bounced off this one faster than I thought I would, something just felt off. I got the vibe that this game was tired of its own existence. I think the idea of the Monkey Island games are either completely exhausted, or in need of a complete reboot. Having the original guy come back to direct it, while being necessary for its existence, was probably a bad creative idea. Putting Ron Gilbert in charge again after all this time turned this thing into a nostalgia play about being salty and old, which is not something I would want to cop to. It feels like I would be putting one foot in the grave if I played this thing to completion.

Or maybe the problem is the art style and @zombiepie can fight me.
